Most foreign tourists don't need a visa to enter Thailand.
If you enter Thailand by plane, you can enter as often as you want. Your stay shouldn't excced 15 or 30 days, depending on your nationality.
If you enter Thailand by land, you can cross the border only twice a year, without a visa. But – if you cross the border with a visa 2 times already, you cannot enter Thailand by land without a visa anymore.
If you want to stay longer, you should apply for a visa before entering Thailand.
There are different types ov visa, depending on your travelling purpose:
TOURIST VISA
With a tourist visa you can enter Thailand and stay for 60 days, extendable at an immigration office for another 30 days.*
The tourist visa has 2 different types:
Single Entry – good for one entry in Thailand. If you leave the country within the 60 days, your visa will expire. By entering Thailand again you will get only 15 / 30 days permission.
Multiple Entry – good for multiple entries to Thailand. You can enter Thailand as often as you want, as long as your visa is valid (6 months). Each stay shouldn't exceed 60 days, which can be extended at any immigration office.*
This visa does not expire by leaving the country.

NON IMMIGRANT VISA
If you want to stay longer you need a Non Immigrant Visa.
In most cases, the Non Immigrant Visa will be issued in your home country ONLY.
Depending of the purpose of stay, there are different types of the Non Immigrant Visa,
e.g.
Non Immigrant O for retirement oder family visa
Non Immigrant B for workung in Thailand
Non Immigrant ED for students
MARRIAGE / FAMILY VISA
If you are married with a Thai or have a Thai child, you can apply for a one year visa to stay with your family. For this visa you must meet some requirements, beside several documents you need a Non Immigrant O Visa and either a thai bank account with 400,000 THB or a monthly income of 40,000 THB, or a combination of both.

RETIREMENT VISA
For the retirement visa you must be at least 50 years old. Beside some documents you need a Non Immigrant O Visa and either a thai bank account with 800,000 THB or a monthly income of 65,000 THB, or a combination of both.

ED VISA
The ED visa is good for studying in Thailand, e.g. at a language school or university.
At the moment it is not easy to get an ED visa because of several circumstances.
